Where the “8 Glasses a Day” Number Came From
The most-cited origin traces back to a 1945 recommendation from the US Food and Nutrition Board: “A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters daily in most instances.” What people forgot to quote was the very next sentence: “Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.”
The 2.5L figure included water in food. Fruit, vegetables, soup, coffee, tea, yogurt, rice — all of it counts. By the time you factor in food water (roughly 20-30% of daily intake for most people), the actual beverage requirement dropped substantially.
Somewhere between 1945 and today, the “most of this from food” caveat was quietly dropped, and “2.5 liters” was rounded to “eight 8-ounce glasses” for easier repetition. The 8×8 rule was born, and it stuck.

Both include water from food. Subtracting an average 20-30% for food water leaves roughly:
- Men: 2.5 – 3 litres from beverages
- Women: 2 – 2.3 litres from beverages
Those are population averages. Your individual number can be meaningfully higher or lower.
The Factors That Actually Shift Your Needs
Individual variation is the real story. The factors that reliably change how much water you actually need:
- Body weight. Bigger bodies contain more water and need more to replace what’s lost. A common rule of thumb is 30-35 ml of water per kg of body weight per day — a 60kg person needs ~2L, a 90kg person needs closer to 3L, before accounting for anything else.

- Certain medications. Diuretics obviously raise needs. Some blood pressure medications and stimulants have milder but real effects.
The population-average numbers assume “average” on all of these dimensions. Very few people are average on all of them.
The Signals That Actually Matter
A more useful question than “am I hitting the number?” is “am I actually hydrated?” The body has several reasonable signals:
- Urine colour. Pale yellow, like straw, is well-hydrated. Dark yellow suggests you’re behind. Completely colourless can mean you’re drinking more than needed (usually harmless, occasionally a sign to slow down).
- Frequency. Peeing every 3-4 hours during the day is roughly normal. Much less often, especially with dark colour, is under-hydration.
- Thirst. Genuine thirst is a reliable late-stage signal — by the time you notice it, you’re already mildly dehydrated. Waiting for thirst is fine for most healthy adults in normal conditions. It’s less reliable for older adults, athletes in heat, and children.
- Headaches and fatigue. Both are common early symptoms of mild dehydration. If a mid-afternoon headache disappears within 30 minutes of drinking 500 ml of water, dehydration was probably the cause.
- Skin turgor. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand. If it snaps back immediately, you’re well-hydrated. If it takes a second or more to flatten, you might be behind.
Any single signal can be misleading. Two or more pointing the same direction is a more reliable read.
The Practical Number for Most People
If you’re a healthy adult in a temperate climate, moderately active, eating a normal mixed diet, the practical target is:
- Roughly 2 – 2.5 litres of beverages per day for women
- Roughly 2.5 – 3 litres of beverages per day for men
That includes water, tea, coffee, milk, and other drinks. It does not include alcohol, which is a net negative for hydration.
Two litres is roughly a 32oz bottle refilled twice, or an 8oz glass eight times — which is where the old rule of thumb came from originally. It’s not wrong as a rough approximation. It’s wrong as a universal law.
Common Misconceptions
“Coffee dehydrates you.” No. Caffeine is a mild diuretic in the sense that it increases urine output slightly, but not enough to result in net fluid loss from a normal-strength cup of coffee. A 250 ml coffee contributes roughly 200-230 ml of net hydration. Same for tea. This has been repeatedly demonstrated in controlled studies since the early 2000s.
“If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.” Technically true, but misleadingly framed. Thirst is designed to trigger before dehydration becomes physiologically meaningful. For a healthy adult, responding to thirst as it arises is generally sufficient. The people for whom thirst is unreliable — elderly, endurance athletes in heat, small children — are the ones who need to drink on schedule rather than by signal.
“Drinking more water flushes out toxins.” The kidneys filter blood regardless of how much water you drink. Above adequate intake, extra water doesn’t remove additional toxins — it just increases urine output. Some evidence suggests very high water intake may slightly reduce kidney stone risk in susceptible people, but there’s no general “flushing” benefit.
“Water helps you lose weight.” Only in the sense that replacing sugary drinks with water reduces calorie intake. Drinking water before meals can slightly reduce food intake in some people, but the effect is small. Water is not a weight-loss intervention on its own.
“You can’t drink too much water.” You can. Hyponatraemia — dangerously low sodium from excessive water intake — is rare but real. It typically requires drinking several litres in a very short time, usually during endurance events. Not something a normal person needs to worry about, but the “more is always better” framing is wrong.

Should I drink water first thing in the morning?
Probably worth doing, but not for the reasons often cited. Does drinking water with meals hurt digestion?
No. This claim comes up frequently but has no evidence behind it. Water with meals can actually help digestion by softening food and supporting the digestive enzymes. Some people find it fills them up too quickly, but that’s a preference issue, not a physiological problem.
Is sparkling water as hydrating as still water?
Yes. Carbonation doesn’t affect hydration status. Sparkling water counts the same as still water for daily intake. Some studies suggest sparkling water may increase satiety more than still water, which can be useful if you’re trying to eat less between meals.
What about electrolyte drinks?
For normal daily hydration, you don’t need electrolyte drinks. Your kidneys manage sodium and potassium balance from food intake in normal conditions. Electrolytes become genuinely useful during prolonged intense exercise (over 60-90 minutes), in extreme heat, during illness with significant fluid loss, or when eating a very low-sodium diet. The most reliable indicator is body weight before and after training — losing more than 2% of body weight during a session means you weren’t drinking enough.
Can you actually drink too much water?
Yes, though it’s uncommon. Water intoxication (hyponatraemia) happens when sodium levels in the blood drop too low from excessive water intake. It usually requires drinking several litres over a few hours, most commonly during endurance events or as part of certain medical conditions. For a normal person drinking to thirst plus a bit extra, the risk is essentially zero.

More important than the exact number is the consistency. Drinking three litres one day and none the next isn’t the same as drinking two litres daily. Your body handles steady intake much better than boom-and-bust.
